Pr. WORKNEH Abebaw Degu

Professeur d'intelligence artificielle

Abebaw Degu Workneh is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes (UEMF), where he received his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence in 2024.

His research focuses on learning-based decision-making under uncertainty, encompassing reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, and trustworthy and uncertainty-aware artificial intelligence. His work emphasizes robustness, partial observability, calibration, explainability, and reliable learning under distribution shift, with applications in healthcare, sustainable and precision agriculture, cybersecurity, and cyber–physical systems. A central theme of his research is the development of deployable, dependable AI methods with measurable real-world impact.

Between November 2024 and December 2025, Prof. Workneh served as the institutional coordinator at UEMF for REMARKABLE (Rural Environmental Monitoring via ultra wide-ARea networKs And distributed federated Learning), a project funded by the European Commission under the HORIZON-MSCA-2021-SE-01 Staff Exchanges programme, involving 11 European and 5 African institutions. In this role, he coordinated and managed UEMF’s scientific and organizational contributions, led research activities on AI-driven rural environmental monitoring with a focus on distributed and federated learning, and ensured the scientific quality and timely delivery of institutional outputs in compliance with MSCA requirements. He also supported technical coordination across the consortium, facilitated secondment activities by hosting researchers from partner institutions, and contributed to project communication, reporting, and dissemination.

Before joining UEMF, he taught Software Engineering at Debre Berhan University, Ethiopia, from 2016 to 2021, where he was actively involved in teaching, curriculum development, and student supervision. In 2024, he served on the Scientific Committee of the 1st International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (IAIO), organized by the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI, under the auspices of UNESCO) in collaboration with the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), Riyadh.

He welcomes academic and industrial collaborations at the intersection of artificial intelligence, health, sustainability, and security, particularly initiatives that translate theoretical advances into reliable, real-world AI systems.
