Smart Charging of the Electric Vehicle in the Moroccan Context

Subject

Smart Charging of the Electric Vehicle in the Moroccan Context

Description of the subject

Nowadays, the electric grid is facing significant challenges in terms of demand and supply of energy. The electrification of the transport sector (ie electric vehicles, electric buses, electric scooters) might potentially offshoot the demand, while the renewable sources (ie solar and wind) offer limited and variable supply. This situation is often aggravated by a constantly rising demand for energy by the population. Smart Grid technologies are intended to offer remedies to the energy demand/supply to the power grid. Such technologies are Vehicle2Grid (V2G), vehicle2Building (V2B), Demand Side Response (DSR), Energy Storage (ES), among others. First prototypes of these technologies have already been deployed and tested in some countries such as China, India, Brazil, the UK, and the EU.

The aim of this project is to study the feasibility of Smart Grid technologies in the Moroccan context. In other words:

(1) Study the technical viability and deployment of “smart charging” of the electric vehicle (the charging of an EV in an optimal way according to the real-time needs of the grid.) (
2) Study the implementation of V2X (includes both V2G and V2B: the bidirectional flow of energy, from the grid/building to the battery and vice versa.)
(3) Study the economic feasibility of these technologies in Morocco.
Proposes proper financial incentives to the electric vehicle owner for a successful implementation of the Smart Grid technologies. (pricing, charging times, energy aggregation, etc.)
